Okay, just to be contrary, I’d like to say that I do think that Dean had it worse than Sam growing up.
They were both poor, and motherless, and had a father who probably fancied himself a great dad (but wasn’t).
BUT: Sam was NOT responsible for anyone. And he did have an older sibling, who - while not qualified in the least for this job - was made responsible for Sam. So even just in this respect, Dean had it worse. Because he had nobody who was made responsible for him when John took off and left the two boys by themselves.
And also, and this is canon, Sam had an actual supernatural being looking after him when John went on a hunt and took Dean with him. And those not-so-imaginary friends are quite capable as one could see when this one guy changed, washed and dried the sheets for this one little guy. When John took off by himself and left Dean in charge of Sam, Dean had NO ONE to help him out in any way.
Just saying.
